Design Hero is an application that bridges the gap between high school students and design experience through meaningful volunteer experiences.

Our prototype is innovative by providing a local and global platform for organizations, design mentors, and high school students to work collaboratively.

Project Overview

Within 8 days, 655 teams across Canada, U.S., U.K., and New Zealand are tasked with designing a tabloid application that provide a safe way for high school students (13-17) to #DiscoverDesign.

The Problem

Many high school students find themselves hesitating further exploration on what they want to pursue. Also, they often encounter a feeling lost in developing their skillsets due to having no proper bridge between mentors and students.

Research

We conducted a multi-methodology research effort to better understand how they wish to improve their quality of life, their daily routine, and how academic researchers have sought to explore these questions in their relative fields of study.

Value Proposition

"How might we design an application to bridge the gap between students and design experience to motivate/encourage them to be part of the design community?"

Design Principles

Our design must provide

  • Effective Guidance
  • Appealing Design
  • Explorative Contents
  • Learning through experience
  • Encouraging Communications

Why is it important to provide 'Learning Through Experience'?

- Students can better grasp concepts
- Students have the opportunity to be more creative
- Students have the opportunity to reflect
- Students’ mistakes become valuable experiences
- Teachers often observe improved attitudes toward learning
- How you can incorporate experiential learning in the classroom

* It is important to remember that high school has changed too. Students are better prepared than they were a generation ago. By the time they enter university, they are more aware of the new demands on their time and achievements.

Iterations

Before starting on our iterations, our team's done a design activity called 'Crazy8' which allowed us to come up with many different rough designs in 5 minutes.

For the project, building a brand identity was an intriguing part where we could create different themes, logo, typography, and colour pallet based on the design thinking behind the product.

Final Prototype

Our prototype is innovative by providing a local and global platform for organizations, design mentors, and high school students to work collaboratively.

For students, they gain valuable learning experience through a supportive resource.

Design mentors and organizations also benefit from the opportunity as they have built connections among themselves and helped the design community grow. It is especially crucial when we're living in such unprecedented time.
